When a child leaves the hospital after physically recovering from their burns, they return to their schools, friends, and families where they are often the only burn survivor. They must contend with many difficult psychological, physical, and emotional issues. Consequently, we understand the importance for children and teens to be with other kids who have experienced the same injuries, painful rehabilitation, and social consequences. They can share their emotions and stories in a safe, nurturing, and fun environment.
In addition to participating in usual camp activities such as swimming, horseback riding, hiking, canoeing, and crafts, the children also gain social confidence and the ability to cope with life after being burned.
The Burn Camp counselors are comprised of U of M nurses, occupational and physical therapists, Michigan firefighters, and social workers who have extensive expertise in treating and caring for pediatric burn patients. Our goal is for the kids to not only have a great time but to experience personal growth.
Every child treated at our center is offered the opportunity to attend Burn Camp through generous donations. It costs approximately $500 to send one child to camp for a week. Other donations needed for camp include, (new items only please):
- Travel size hygiene items:
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Sunscreen
- Shampoo
- Conditioner
- Body lotion
- Combs
- Other items needed:
- Bandanas
- Toys (bouncy balls, beach balls, etc.)
- Blank journals and pens
- Tote bags
